Jahan Shah, son of Kara Yusuf son of Kara Muhammad, is regarded as the greatest ruler of Kara Koyunlu. He was born in 1399 AD = 802 AH, in Mardin, Turkey. A poet, writer and leader of the Oghuz Turks Kara Koyunlu dynasty in Azerbaijan and Aran (1436-1467), he was able to terminate the danger of the Timurids in 1447 and expand the territory of Kara Koyunlu to the fullest extent. This included eastern Anatolia, most of present-day Iraq, central and southern Iran, Isfahan in 1452, Persia and Kerman in 1453 besides Herat in 1458. He subjugated the neighboring countries, too. During his reign, Jahan Shah established the schools of Gok and Muzaffaria in the capital, Tabriz, and encouraged science, scholars, writers and poets. He built many libraries and cultural buildings. He died on November 11, 1467, in Mush, Turkey.
