Abstract

The position of women in Islam is considered one of the most important issues that researchers are concerned with in the Orient as well as in the Occident. Some of the issues related to women in Islam are sometimes presented and discussed in ways that demonstrate that Islam oppresses and treats women unfairly. For example, there is more criticism now than before of the Islamic inheritance law of women. The fact that the woman receives half of the male's inheritance is considered a form of disadvantage or discrimination. My contribution reflects the views of the Muslim researcher Ruqayya Ṭaha Ǧābir al-ʿAlwānī (Ruqayya is a professor of Islamic Jurisprudence and its principals at al-Bahrain University) on the subject of inheritance rights for women in Islam. Ruqayya deals with the questions of women in Islam. In her book about Aṯar al-ʿurf fī fahm an-nuṣūṣ qaḍāya al-marʾa unmūḏağan (The effect of custom on understanding texts: women's issues as a model) and in her article about Mīrāṯ al-marʾa baina an-naṣṣ wat-taʾwīl (The inheritance of women in Islam between text and interpretation) the author tries to deal with the issue of the inheritance of women in relation the demand for equality between men and women concerning inheritance.
