Abstract

The mother is the core and crux of the family. She is entrusted with diverse family roles, including supporting her husband, offering him advise on all issues related to the family, through undertaking house chores, and above all caring for the children and inculcating good manners in them. Some mothers also seek to follow the example of their grandmothers and other ideal mother figures, including the mothers of the prophets in their respective religions. Ancient societies in the East were dominated by the male authority of the father, this in turn reflected in life of the Children of Israel, in which the family was subject to the absolute authority the father, this is manifested in the texts of Miqraa (Tanakh). Still, the mother occupied a prominent position in Miqraa and its commandments. The Jewish mother motif recurred in Miqraa, influencing the upbringing of Jewish children up until the moment. Even the Jewishness of the mother is now a prerequisite for the Jewishness of the children. So, this study addresses the ways in which the mothers who were associated with the children of Israel were presented in Miqraa and the ways these images impact of Jews today.
