Abstract

The Arabic grammarians, in dealing with the Arabic conjunctive correlation imma...aw, have presented two different considerations: one at the syntactic level and the other at the semantic level. Syntactically, neither the syntactic category of the particle imma nor its function has been reasoned out, within the sentence, pursuing the arguments of; is this particle a true conjunction, or does it have a syntactic function. Convincing arguments have not been given for the position it occupies in the syntactic structure. However, semantically, there is a tendency to attribute to it properties of other correlative particles, without giving sufficient arguments of the semantic load that this particle expresses nor of the informative role it plays. The main goal of this paper is to provide a syntactic and semantic analysis of the Arabic conjunctive correlative construction imma...aw and the type of information it expresses, based on the cartographic model of studies of coordination according to the theoretical framework of the minimalist program (Chomsky 1995), the hypothesis of the left periphery of the clause (Rizzi 1997) and the informative semantic interpretation (Zubizarreta 1998, 1999).
