ABSTRACT:The world of translation is experiencing a major turning point that will certainly have a major impact on the work of translators. Until a few decades ago, the current technological advances were unimaginable. Machines are no longer a secondary tool for translators, but a co-thinker, co-translator and co-writer. How translators can keep pace with these developments and what training institutions need to ensure is explained here. Whether current advances in AI, which are mainly reflected in the form of machine translation systems (MT), epitomise a hopeless future in which highly qualified linguists and professional translators are replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) will be discussed in more detail in this article. The focus is on the language pair German/Arabic, with the aim of making prospective translators and students aware of the latest developments in the translation industry, offering teachers in translation training institutions practical guidance for meaningful study programmes and showing professional translators how to use the new technologies efficiently in practice.
