Abstract

This article focuses on the analysis of the footnotes in the Spanish version of the historiographical chronicle al-Muqtabas III by Ibn Ḥayyān al-Qurtubī. The technique of inserting footnotes in the target text to expand on the information presented in the source text has garnered significant attention in translation studies, with some scholars in favor and others against it, given that these footnotes create a noticeable visibility of the translator's role in the translational process. Due to their high frequency, the analysis centers on footnotes of the cultural category, which are common in this type of work. The goal is to identify and classify these footnotes into subcategories based on their content. Furthermore, this category of footnotes is analyzed to determine the reasons behind their inclusion in the target text and the strategies employed by the translators. To achieve this, the classification of cultural footnotes proposed by Newmark (2010) is used. The article concludes that the inserted footnotes are highly useful for clarifying information that readers would not need to seek out outside of the translated version.
