Abstract
: In the Holy Quran, the verb (أتى) /ʾataa/, which corresponds to "venir" (to come) in French, is among the most frequently used verbs. In fact, it appears 523 times in the Quran in various tenses and forms. Moreover, the meanings of the verb (أتى) in the Quran vary depending on the context, making it a polysemous verb (a verb with multiple meanings). We have selected nine examples of its occurrences in the Quran, which appear in different forms. This study focuses on analyzing and comparing three contemporary French translations of the verb (أتى) in the Quran, relying on two translation theories. The aim is to understand the meanings of this polysemous verb in different Quranic verses on one hand, and to highlight the lexical and semantic choices made in these three translations, identifying the closest equivalents on the other hand. This study has revealed the multiple meanings of the verb (أتى) in the Quran, some of the most prominent being: to approach, to become, to head towards, to commit, to be destroyed, to descend, to be conveyed, to arrive, to come, and so on.
